Scholarships

Scholarships

The Centre on Aging has introduced three scholarships to support interdisciplinary aging research undertaken by University of Calgary graduate students and post-doctoral scholars, as well as professional development for mature students.

Barrie Strafford

Barrie I. Strafford Graduate Scholarships

These prestigious scholarships are awarded annually to one master’s and one doctoral student conducting interdisciplinary aging research that aims to improve the lives of older adults or the aging population. Students must apply through the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Award Competition. The Graduate Award Committee reviews applications for eligibility and alignment with the terms of reference for the scholarships (interdisciplinary aging-related research). Applications of promising candidates are forwarded to us to review for their alignment with our mandate.

Master’s awards are valued at $20,000 for one year, plus a $2,500 research stipend managed by the graduate supervisor. Doctoral awards are valued at $30,000 per year for two years, and include a $2,500 per year research stipend, also managed by the supervisor.

Barrie I. Strafford Post-Doctoral Scholarhip

These scholarships are awarded annually to post-doctoral scholars conducting research with an interdisciplinary aging focus. Since our post-doctoral scholarships are managed through the O’Brien Institute for Public Health’s funding program, trainees must be supervised by an O’Brien Institute member to apply. The scientific review is conducted by an O’Brien Institute panel, and promising candidates are identified for our consideration. These scholarships provide matching funds of up to $25,000 per year for two years. For competition deadlines, visit the O'Brien Institute's funding program page.

June Rock

P. June Rock Memorial Graduate Scholarship

This $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a mature graduate student seeking added professional development. For the scholarship, a mature student is defined as one who has been away from full-time studies for at least two calendar years since completing their last degree. Students must apply through the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Award Competition. The Graduate Award Committee reviews applications for eligibility and alignment with the terms of reference. Applications of promising candidates are forwarded to us to review for merit.

Commemorating Mrs. P. June Rock

Mrs. June Rock, an accomplished leader whose career combined nursing, adult education, and healthcare administration, passed away in April 2019. To reflect June's valuable contributions and achievements, the Rock family and the Centre on Aging have established an endowed scholarship. To make a donation in memory of June Rock, select "Cumming School of Medicine Impact Fund" from the designation list and type "June Rock Memorial Endowment" in the comments.
