Associate Scientific Director – Population Health

The O'Brien Institute is hiring an Associate Scientific Director – Population Health

Dr. Christine Friedenreich, PhD, will soon be completing her term as Associate Scientific Director, O’Brien Institute for Public Health. Dr. Friedenreich has served as the Institute’s Associate Scientific Director since 2018, championing the advancement of public health through research excellence. She has also served as the Institute’s Interim Scientific Director from March to November 2020 and led the Internal Peer Review program from 2014 to 2020. Under her leadership, the Institute has hosted important public health events, contributed to local, regional, and national policy-level conversations, supported members in securing research funding, and provided career mentoring. Dr. Friedenreich has co-chaired the University of Calgary’s COVID-19 Analytics and Strategy Group since March 2020 and strengthened collaborative relationships with the City of Calgary. We thank Dr. Friedenreich for her dedicated service and contributions to the University and public health.

The O’Brien Institute for Public Health invites applications for the position of Associate Scientific Director – Population Health (0.2 FTE). This leadership position will be responsible for developing and executing strategies to use research and innovation to advance population health and the conditions that determine health. The successful candidate will be an active member of the O’Brien Institute for Public Health, have formal training in population health research methods (PhD or MD plus formal research training), experience leading impactful population health research initiatives and demonstrated leadership skills. A track record of community partnerships, Tri-Council funding as a nominated principal applicant, dissemination of findings to local, national and international audiences and knowledge exchange to improve population health are important. Duties with this position include, but are not limited to, implementing the strategic priorities in population health research for the Institute that include fostering innovations, research and scholarship initiatives including catalyst, operating and team grants and building strategic links between the Institute and partner organizations.

The successful candidate will assume leadership of the Institute’s Population Health programs and initiatives. Ideally, the successful candidate would commence this role on April 1, 2022.
