Research and Advocacy, Research versus Advocacy, and Walking the Fine Line

The 2016 Campus Alberta Health Outcomes and Public Health annual forum tackled that universal aspect that determines the focus and approach of most public health researchers – Research and Advocacy, or Research vs. Advocacy. As the host of the forum, the O’Brien Institute explored this perennial question, while illustrating how pan-provincial partnerships have created platforms to combine expertise, educational programs, and research initiatives that can be adopted to individual researchers’ principles and priorities. Examples of how these types of initiatives can enhance internationally leading innovation in health services and population health were also shared.

Steven Lewis, President, Access Consulting Ltd. and Adjunct Professor of Health Policy, Faculty of Health Sciences, Simon Fraser University,

Mr. Steven Lewis is a health policy and research consultant based in Saskatoon, and adjunct professor of health policy at Simon Fraser University. Prior to resuming a full-time consulting practice, Mr. Lewis headed a health research-granting agency and spent seven years as CEO of the Health Services Utilization and Research Commission in Saskatchewan. He has served on various boards and committees, including the Governing Council of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Saskatchewan Health Quality Council, the Health Council of Canada, and the editorial boards of several journals, including Open Medicine. Mr. Lewis writes frequently on improving quality, equity, and performance in health care, and is the moderator of the Meaningful Analogies in Sports and Health (MASH) blog.
