Campus AB 2021

2021 a New Beginning for Public Health

Campus Alberta Health Outcomes and Public Health Symposium

The 2021 Campus Alberta Annual Provincial Forum on Health Outcomes and Public Health will be held on Monday, May 17, 2021 online this year.

The COVID-19 pandemic is reshaping public health, and Campus Alberta Health Outcomes and Public Health (HOPH) offers a platform through which we can work collectively to improve our future. On May 17, 2021, the 8th Annual HOPH Conference will re-gather our provincial partners and examine the opportunities and challenges we face on our journey toward the future of public health.

Part 1: America's painful lessons from COVID-19 – A way forward for public health with Dr. Georges C. Benjamin

"It's been a year like no other in recent history," American Public Health Association (APHA) Executive Director Dr. Georges Benjamin, MD.

On May 17, Dr. Benjamin will reflect back on the 2001 anthrax attacks and subsequent pandemic near-misses, as part of his high-level and long-term view on the "lessons to be learned" from the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Benjamin will discuss how APHA convened international expertise to guide the public health response to COVID-19 for practitioners and decision makers and worked tirelessly to share science-based information with the public.

His insights will resonate with a Canadian audience, and include an analysis of government disinvestment in pandemic preparedness; politicization of pandemic responses; public health correlates of distrust in leadership; do's and don'ts of risk communications; and pandemic-highlighted structural problems that have laid bare failures of jurisdictional coordination and inequities. Dr. Benjamin will also explain why this is the moment to build the sustainable and well-funded public health systems that all communities deserve.

Campus Alberta members: submit questions here ahead of time for Dr. Benjamin to discuss during an afternoon fireside chat.
