About the event
Join the O’Brien Institute for Public Health for an inspiring showcase of innovative research initiatives within health and healthcare systems. Charting new horizons: Empowering healthcare evolution through research and collaboration will highlight cutting-edge research projects undertaken by O’Brien Institute members, demonstrating their commitment to advancing health and healthcare practices. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the latest developments shaping the future of healthcare delivery in Alberta.
The half-day symposium will also feature an engaging panel discussion on the Health System Impact Fellowship, which offers PhD trainees, postdoctoral researchers, and early career researchers in health services and policy fields the chance to develop research projects addressing pressing health system issues, fostering evidence-informed decision-making.
Emerging scholars will have an opportunity to showcase their research endeavours, offering fresh perspectives and novel approaches to pressing health challenges during a student poster presentation session.
The event will conclude with a networking lunch and the opportunity to have professional headshots taken. The headshot sign-up sheet will be made available to registrants.

Dr. Michelle Grinman, MD
Dr. Michelle Grinman is a General Internal Medicine Specialist and health services researcher with expertise in Hospital at Home, Virtual Care, and Integration of Care.
Dr. Jennifer Jackson, PhD, RN
Dr. Jennifer Jackson, PhD, RN is an assistant professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary. She studies nursing work and health systems in the context of community-based harm reduction services, as part of the WISHES research team.
Dr. Eddy Lang, MD
Dr. Lang is a professor & department head for emergency medicine at Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary & Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone. His areas of interest are knowledge translation, evidence-based medicine & operations research.

Dr. Maria Santana, MPharm, PhD
Dr. Maria J. Santana is a health services researcher, patient and family-centred care scientist, an associate professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Community Health Sciences at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary.

Dr. Braden Manns, MD
Dr. Manns is a professor in Health Economics and a Kidney Specialist at the University of Calgary. He has expertise in Applied Health Economics, and a current research interest of his is assessing the impact of different physician payment models.

Dr. Elena Lopatina, MD, PhD
Dr. Elena Lopatina is a Senior Scientist with the Alberta Virtual Chronic Pain Program and the Alberta Pain Strategy, Strategic Clinical Networks™ at Alberta Health Services. She is also an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Kimberly Manalili, PhD
Dr. Kimberly Manalili is a Health System Impact Postdoctoral Fellow with Alberta Health Services Provincial Population and Public Health, and the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Erin McCabe, PhD
Dr. Erin McCabe is a CIHR Health System Impact Fellow co-funded by CIHR, Alberta Health Services Addictions & Mental Health Provincial Portfolio, and Mitacs.
