CHS and O'Brien Institute Seminar Series

Epidemic Modeling: Investigating Popular Approaches in the Context of COVID-19

Date: April 22, 2022
Time: 12 - 1 p.m.
Place: Online via Zoom

The Department of Community Health Sciences and the O’Brien Institute for Public Health presents:

Epidemic Modeling: Investigating Popular Approaches in the Context of COVID-19

Description: Statistical modeling of infectious diseases allows researchers to study disease transmission, quantify the effectiveness of interventions, and forecast future epidemic trajectory, aiding the public health mission to stop the spread of such diseases. This presentation will cover several popular approaches to infectious disease modeling and compare the benefits and goals of each approach. The modeling approaches will be illustrated and explored in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Learning objectives:

  • Gain an understanding of epidemic data and how it can be used in statistical models.

  • Learn several common approaches to infectious disease modeling and discuss their benefits and drawbacks.

  • Identify future opportunities to improve the field of epidemic modeling.

Speaker(s):

Dr. Caitlin Ward

Dr. Caitlin Ward

Dr. Caitlin Ward is a Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute (CANSSI) distinguished postdoctoral fellow and a postdoctoral associate in the Mathematics & Statistics Department at the University of Calgary. Her main research interests are infectious disease modeling, Bayesian statistics, and spatial modeling. Dr. Ward received her Ph.D. in biostatistics from the University of Iowa, where she developed Bayesian methods for epidemic modeling and collaborated with researchers in radiology, nursing, and public health.

This event is a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. If you are a regular attendee, please keep track of your attendance. If you need confirmation of attendance, the O'Brien Institute can provide this if we are given attendance dates.
