A real man: Unboxing stereotypes of masculinity through art and self expression

ManBox Project participants share their art and the insights it gave them into their identity

What does it mean to be a real man? How can toxic masculinity and the stereotypes constructed by society negatively affect men and their ability to connect with themselves and others?

The ManBox Project, a new community-led research project from the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Social Work and the Alberta Men’s Network, is exploring the ideas of masculinity through art and community engagement. Will Tabak, UCalgary Alumni and Alberta Men’s Network Coordinator, is working to break down walls by creating actual boxes and asking men to paint them as a way of self-expression of their identity.
