The Alberta Health Economics Study Group (AHESG) brings together people from all backgrounds with an interest in health policy and health economics for a day of lively discussion about current research in health economics in Alberta. This event provides an excellent opportunity to present work and receive feedback from researchers and policy makers in the province, and to discuss career, methods, and policy topics with students, academics, and health system policy and decision-makers.

Diverse perspectives are valued, and our goal is to create an inclusive and respectful conference environment. We encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to attend and welcome abstract submissions from health systems, policy, and economics research areas.

All papers are pre-circulated and discussed in 45-minute sessions using discussants rather than author presentations.

The AHESG meeting promotes a study group atmosphere. AHESG attendees will be offered the following free of charge:

  • Networking event on October 1, 2026
  • All day seminar, including keynote address on October 2, 2026
  • Lunch and refreshments during the seminar
  • For attendees travelling from Edmonton: Round trip charter bus from Edmonton to Calgary and hotel accommodation (1 night)

  • Dr. Carina Oedingen received the Best New Investigator Podium Research Presentation Award at ISPOR 2025

Team awards and achievements: 

  • Dr. Carina Oedingen, UCalgary Eyes High Postdoctoral Fellow (Supervisor: Dr. Deborah Marshall), received the Best New Investigator Podium Research Presentation award at ISPOR 2025 for her presentation, "From Research to Policy: Incorporating Patient Preferences for Colorectal Cancer Treatments into Health Technology Assessment."

    Her research draws on the Colorectal Cancer Canada (CCC) Patient Values Project (PVP) to explore methods for integrating quantitative patient preferences into health technology assessment (HTA). With nearly 4,500 attendees and a highly competitive program, this recognition is a significant achievement—congratulations, Carina!

  • Dr. Eldon Spackman PhD Student Oby Ezenwamelaku received the Distinguished Doctoral Recruitment Scholarships 2026 Award
     
  • Dr. Amity Quinn PhD Student Eddie Etim received the 2026 Canada Impact+Research Training Award (CIRTA/CITRA)
     
  • Dr. Ray Fui received an Inaugural Early Career Researcher Award in Cancer Biostatistics, a joint award by CIHR-ICR (Institute of Cancer Research) and CSEB (Canadian Society for Epidemiology and Biostatistics).   • Dr. Deborah Marshall and UofC colleagues have been invited to join UCalgary’s first role in the Unified Horizon Europe Team Grant “Unifying Framework for Patient-Centred Clinical-Study Endpoints Derived from Digital Health Technologies.” This 5-year project, which is led out of Erasmus University Rotterdam Netherlands, includes international research collaboration with universities; hospitals; patient organizations; clinical guideline organizations; and industry partners from Europe.   • The Arthritis Society Canada announced its Top 10 Research Advances of 2025, highlighting discoveries that are advancing how arthritis is diagnosed. Among the recipients were the following (see link for full story https://arthritis.ca/about-us/what-we-do/research/).
    • The UCAN CAN-DU and UCAN CURE Consortia (Dr. Susanne Benseler; Dr. Rae Yeung; Dr. Deborah Marshall; et al) with article “A window of opportunity in childhood arthritis”
    • Dr. Darren Mazzei, PhD Graduate of Dr. Deborah Marshall’s with article “Estimating the impact of investments in education and exercise for people living with osteoarthritis”
