Bridge Funding

O'Brien awards are available for members evolving an unsuccessful Tri-council application into a competitive re-submission

O’Brien Institute Bridge Funding is awarded to members who have unsuccessfully submitted research project applications to a Tri-council competition, with agency reviews suggesting that revision/resubmission after additional work could result in a successful application.

Requirements:

  • The unsuccessful application will have received O’Brien Institute Internal Peer Review
  • The unsuccessful application was made to a Tri-council program with repeating deadlines, offering the opportunity for revision/resubmission to the same program
  • The unsuccessful application will not have received CIHR Priority Announcement Funding
  • The project for which Bridge Funding is being requested will not have previously received O’Brien Institute Bridge or CIHR Priority Announcement funding
  • Agency reviews of the unsuccessful application will have been forwarded to iph@ucalgary.ca
  • Agency reviews, and their interpretation by applicants and Institute Review Leads, will suggest bridging activities, or early steps of the project, that could be completed to strengthen a revised application for resubmission
  • The revised application will undergo O’Brien Internal Peer Review

Process:

  • Register for O’Brien Internal Peer Review for applications to Tri-council competitions (Project, Discovery, and Insight Grants; others considered on case-by-case basis)
  • When Agency decisions and reviews are available, forward them to iph@ucalgary.ca
  • An Institute Review Lead will contact you to discuss your revise/resubmit plan, and your potential use of an O’Brien Bridge Grant (< $40,000 over 1-2 years)
  • Submit a Bridge Funding Request to iph@ucalgary.ca, using this template
    • If successful, an Institute Bridge Award would become effective within 1 month of the decision/review material being received by iph@ucalgary.ca
  • Direct outcomes of the Bridge Award will be assessed during Review Lead review of the revised submission (“response to reviewers” and “progress” sections, for example) and success of resubmission.  Longer term outcomes will be assessed by provision of annual outcomes reporting
