The Centre for Health Policy, O’Brien Institute welcomes Dr. Tom Noseworthy
After an extensive search, the O'Brien Institute welcomes Dr. Tom Noseworthy, MD, as Academic Director of the Centre for Health Policy. The search and selection committee, made up of Dr. Braden Manns, Dr. Ellen Perrault, Dr. Jennifer Zwicker, Mr. John Sproule, Mr. Mark Leduc, Dr. Raylene Reimer, and Dr. Todd Anderson, narrowed down the field of applicants to three finalists of which Dr. Noseworthy was selected to serve a one-year inaugural term starting this month.
In his new role, Dr. Noseworthy will be responsible for bringing together a community of UCalgary health policy scholars, establishing an operational plan for the Centre and building partnerships with stakeholders internal and external to the University of Calgary. Dr. Noseworthy will focus on establishing organizational foundations and building future leadership capacity for the Centre.
Dr. Noseworthy is Professor Emeritus (Health Policy & Management) of Community Health Sciences, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. His career has spanned from patient care as an intensive care physician, to hospital CEO, to leadership of Alberta Health Services’ Strategic Clinical Networks and the British Columbia Academic Health Science Network. He has authored/co-authored over 160 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, given over 400 invited presentations and supervised undergraduate students through post-doctoral scholars.
Dr. Noseworthy has extensive health policy experience including roles with The Prime Minister’s National Forum on Health, National Advisory Council on Health Infrastructure and the Federal Provincial Territorial Advisory Committee on Health Infostructure and Emerging Technologies. He has been recognized by the Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons as one of Alberta’s Top 100 Physicians of the Century. Dr. Noseworthy has been awarded the Alberta Centennial Medal and Diamond Jubilee Medal, and in 2007, he was appointed to the Order of Canada for his contributions to health policy and Medicare.
