Dr. Peter Dawson adds to Canadian military heritage with 3D scanning of WWII bomber plane.
Dr. Peter Dawson and his students recently digitally captured an Avro Lancaster bomber at the Bomber Command Museum in Nanton, Alberta.
The aircraft is named in honor of a young Calgary pilot, Ian Bazalgette. During a mission to bomb a cave containing V-1 flying bombs in France, Bazalgette’s plane was badly damaged. While most of his crew were able to bail out, two were badly injured and unable to jump. Rather than abandon them, Bazalgette attempted to land the plane, but it exploded on impact. The Lancaster scanned by Dawson and his students has been painted in the colors and markings of Bazalgette’s aircraft.
